Relationship therapy (couple counselling) helps you step outside of your situation and see it from a different perspective. Working with a counsellor gives you, or you and your partner, a chance to think about what you can do to introduce a better way of being together. It also gives you the opportunity to explore complex or difficult issues in a safe and confidential environment.
When working with couples I work within the framework of Integrative Behavioural Couple Therapy (IBCT) which follows a distinct pattern as set out below:
- Pre sessions
Each partner separately completes and returns to me a series of questionnaires for later discussion
- Session 1
I see both partners: What is it like now? What was it like in the past?
- Session 2
Solo session for partner A
- Session 3
Solo session for partner B
- Session 4
We all come together to discuss what we have observed/experienced since all being together and explore behaviour patterns that have come to light. We also talk about where we can go from here i.e. where the work lies and possible paths to take.
